6 of the best 2020 summer activities for kids in Kent
Kent really does have it all; beautiful beaches, wonderful restaurants, historic museums and adventure play areas.
If you’re heading on a Keepers Cottage holiday in 2020, we have got plenty of great ideas to keep the kids (and you) entertained this summer, come rain or shine. So, what are you waiting for?
1. Spend an action-packed day at Betteshanger Park
Located in Deal, Betteshanger Park offers thrills, exciting activities and plenty of adventure.
Try archery, fossil hunting or orienteering — and don’t forget to burn off some energy in the well-equipped play area.
The park is also home to the longest road cycle track in the UK, offering smooth, traffic-free cycling. Or if you prefer mountain biking, enjoy 10km of rugged trails covering a huge range of terrain.
2. Take a trip to the seaside on Walmer and Kingsdown beaches
During summer when it is (hopefully!) warm and sunny, you just can’t beat a day out on the coast.
Kingsdown Beach is a beautiful, secluded shingle beach located just up the coast from the White Cliffs of Dover.
Whether sunbathing, enjoying a picnic or taking an afternoon stroll, it’s the perfect place to enjoy some quiet time with the kids while getting away from it all.
Walmer Beach is another great spot, and is dog-friendly if you’re planning to take your pooch on holiday.
3. Discover amazing wildlife at Howletts Zoo
Housing 390 animals across 52 species, Howletts Wildlife Park in Canterbury is a breeding sanctuary for some of the most rare and endangered species in the world.
Discover the largest herd of African elephants in the UK. The rarely-seen black rhino or the 2 snow leopards that call the zoo their home.
There are also many wooded walkways and pathways to explore, as well as animal talks throughout the summer, where children can learn fun facts and important details about these magnificent animals.
4. Tackle big thrills at Dreamland
Dreamland is only a short drive away from a Keepers Cottage, offering exhilarating rides, fun attractions and The Octopus’s Garden — an indoor play zone that’s been designed to inspire creativity in the little ones.
If it is raining, get your skates on and head to the Roller Room — an 80s style roller disco where you can skate to your heart’s content while listening to some great disco tunes!
5. Become royalty for the day at Dover Castle
When the weather’s not playing ball, delve deep within the walls of Dover Castle and discover what life was like during various points of time in history.
Visit the underground hospital and follow the journey of a wounded WWII pilot, fighting for his life as he is rushed through to the operating theatre.
Or head back in time a little further and meet the royal court of King Henry II.
6. Get artistic with some indoor crafts
Sometimes, there is nothing better than staying inside your holiday cottage, cosying up and getting crafty with some indoor activities the little ones will love.
One of our favourite ideas is to create leaf rubbings. Firstly, head outside and collect loads of different leaves. If they’re wet, leave them to dry for a little while, then place them vein side up on a hard surface, laying a sheet of plain white paper over the leaves.
Finally, grab some crayons and start colouring over the leaves until a beautiful pattern appears.
