6 reasons to visit Sandwich in Kent in 2020
Located just 2 miles from the seaside town of Deal, Sandwich in Kent, is one of the best preserved medieval towns in the UK. Sandwich lies on the River Stour and is much loved for its rich cultural heritage as a Cinque Port.
Small ships regularly sail through, and the town has become popular with tourists looking to discover its ancient buildings, charming country pubs and nature reserves.
So if you’re planning on heading to the Kent coast some time in 2020, we’ve pulled together 6 fantastic reasons why you should stop off to explore the town of Sandwich:
1. Discover the Sandwich Bay flats
Sandwich Bay is a long, pebbled beach located on the east coast. During low tide, expect to see 5 miles of beautiful sand flats, salt marshes and coastal sand dunes.
The beach is also adjacent to the Kent Coastline Walk, offering a gentle ramble across the sand dunes of Royal St Georges to the quay in Sandwich. Here, you can stop for a spot of lunch in one of the terraced bars or restaurants while taking in the wonderful sights of the bustling quay.
2. Enjoy the Golf Open July 2020
The Golf Open runs from the 16th – 19th July 2020, with The Royal St George’s Golf Club in Sandwich once again playing host to this spectacular event.
The golf course features 6,340 yards, 18 holes and 70 par. It’s also set in 450 acres of special scientific interest (SSI) dune land overlooking the breath-taking Pegwell Bay coast.
If you’re looking for accommodation during the tournament, book your holiday cottage now.
3. Take a tour of the Sandwich Guildhall Museum and Archives
Based in the Guildhall right in the heart of Sandwich, Sandwich Guildhall Museum tells the rich and varied story of Sandwich through the ages, from its early beginnings to the present day.
Discover the 1300 A.D Magna Carter, the Charter of the Forest, and other fascinating artefacts dating as far back as the Mesolithic period.
4. Delve into Sandwich’s history at the Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre
Located just outside Sandwich amid the East Kent marshes, sits the Richborough Roman Fort and Amphitheatre.
An English Heritage site, it’s thought to be one of the most important Roman sites in Britain, as the fort saw both the beginning and end of the Roman rule.
Explore the magnificent stone walls of the Saxon Shore fort before heading to the museum to discover Roman artefacts.
And during the summer, why not head towards the sea to spot seals and other local wildlife?
5. Go back in time at the White Mill Rural Heritage Centre
Surrounded by its original outbuildings, White Mill is a smock mill that has retained its original wooden machinery.
It was restored between 1960 and 1961 and today, visitors can go right inside the windmill to see displays of agricultural machinery and equipment in the base.
While you’re there, take the time to explore the many exhibits. They include farming and craft tools, kitchen and laundry equipment. You can also learn more about life in the 1700s at the Wheelwright’s and Blacksmith’s workshop, which is complete with a forge.
6. Eat, drink and be merry in one of Sandwich’s charming pubs
There are no shortage of great pubs in Sandwich. Built in 1941, The Crispin Inn offers traditional old-world charm, with a great selection of traditional English beer and delicious home cooked food.
Or there’s The Mermaid’s Locker which overlooks the Guildhall. It is a tiny pub full of character, with a courtyard garden and a selection of indulgent food and seasonally inspired plates to enjoy.
