Fun things to do in the rain in Deal and around

Phoebe Shipton  ·  1st June 2016

It’s May half term and time is so precious with the family that you cannot possibly let this grey, wet weather stop you from having fun. Here are some ideas for an entertaining day out:

Deal and Dover: Visit the Deal Maritime Museum which houses many artefacts from the town’s  impressive maritime history including a display of Royal Marine memorabilia of uniforms and photographs followed by a trip to Dover Museum and Bronze Age Boat Gallery where you can view the remains of the famous 3000 year old wooden prehistoric boat discovered in Dover in 1992. Finish off with a viewing of the new film release Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at the independent Silvescreen Cinema in Dover.

MargateThe Shell Grotto followed by the Turner Contemporary with a bite to eat at The GB Pizza Co. The Shell Grotto, is home to 4.6 million shells and is a must see as there is really nothing else quite like it. Here you can discover 70 feet of winding underground passages leading to a rectangular chamber decorated with shell mosaics along the way. There is a delightful gift and coffee shop too. The Turner Contemporary showcases contemporary and historical art and this half term there are a number of children’s interactive workhops taking place including manipulating photos using a machine. Finish off with a delicious pizza from the Great British Pizza Company voted by The Sunday Times this March as one of the top 25 pizzerias in the UK.

Canterbury: The Beaney House of Knowledge and Art has creative workshops and activites to keep kids entertained including Design a Beautiful Butterfly and just a short walk away is the wonderful Roman Museum where you can discover treasures as you step back into the streets of Roman Canterbury.  Enjoy a late lunch or early dinner at the family friendly Wagamama.

Please share with us what you are doing this Spring bank holiday.
