Days Out: Margate

One of the places you can visit during your stay is the seaside town of Margate. A short drive from Deal, and with plenty to explore. It makes for a great day out during your stay in East Kent.

Turner Contemporary

The arrival of the Turner Contemporary in 2011 brought about a resurgence to the town. A crowd of trendy creative types from London arrived and the town has slowly been transforming. With galleries, vintage shops, eateries and delis taking over the town.

 

The Old Town, Margate

People still flock to Margate sands on a sunny day. Paddling in the waves, riding the amusements and playing the arcades by the beach is all part of Margate’s charm. Take a walk along the harbour arm to find more bars cafes and the odd curiosity. The Thanet coastline stretches for miles and many people enjoy dog walking and exploring the stretch of beaches.

With a rich artistic heritage, Margate has been captured in paintings by JMW Turner and is the hometown of Tracey Emin- who will be moving back down to Margate soon. The art scene in Margate is as active as ever. A visit to the Turner Contemporary is a must, ever-changing thoughtful exhibitions in a stunning setting by the sea. You can find an Anthony Gormley statue outside, make sure you go when the tide is out otherwise he’ll be engulfed by the waves! Explore Margate’s old town to unearth little galleries and art shops displaying the best of the creative scene.

The Cupcake Cafe

The old town is also great for a bit of shopping. You’ll find endless vintage items to pour over, as well as some stylish boutiques and clothes shops. Little cafes and delis are dotted around if you need some refreshment. The Cupcake Cafe is a great spot for tea and a delicious cake. Otherwise, the Greedy cow offers heartier fare like burgers and large sandwiches.

 

Dreamland is a great day out for the family, and even for grown-ups! By day, Dreamland is a colourful exciting theme park, there’s a retro nod to the seaside history of Margate and the park. You can ride the waltzers, big wheel and dodgems. There’s even the original scenic rollercoaster, one of the first of its kind. Inside there’s vintage pinball machines and a roller disco. During summer evenings you can go along to their Sunset Sessions. There are food trucks and bars to enjoy while you take in live music from a DJ or band. Dreamland is a must for anyone coming to Margate.
