What to do in Kent during October Half Term
With summer drawing to a close, a new school year is on the horizon and it is already time to get back into the swing of things.
Summer may nearly be over but autumn on the Kent coast is an idyllic time of year.
So why not give the family something to look forward to and beat those back-to-school blues? There are hundreds of activities to keep the whole family happy. Here are some of our top picks:
Go on a Treasure Trail round Deal
Download a treasure trail map ready for half term and you will be in for a fun day with the whole family as you explore a new area and making memories together.
The Deal Treasure Hunt Trail is a circular loop which takes you along the seafront and around the High Street, where you can solve a series of sneaky clues set on existing buildings, permanent features and monuments in order to discover the location of the buried treasure!
Roughly 2.5 miles long, you can complete the trail in your own time and at your own pace (it should take no more than 1.5 hours).
And if you get REALLY stuck you can even get clues sent right to your phone! Suitable for ages 6 and above.
Look for bugs at Beastie Days at Brogdale Near Faversham
Kent is known as The Garden of England and what better way to spend the day than to visit Brogdale, Home of the National Fruit Collection, which is a Kentish orchard just outside the beautiful town of Faversham.
Events during October half term include ‘Beastie Day’ (22nd October and 29th October) where you can get up close and personal with a massive collection of bugs including giant cockroaches, millipedes and devil stick insects.
Then go out and hunt for creepy crawlies in the orchard or learn more about the orchards themselves in the lab. Tickets must be purchased in advance.
Face your fears at Screamland in Margate
If you are a fan of all things macabre and Halloween is your favourite day of the year, then the Dreamland has a treat in store for you!
The quirky amusement park and entertainment centre based on a traditional English seaside funfair is located at Margate, Kent and for October it comes alive as Screamland – the biggest scare festival in the area.
Expect several mazes filled with untold horrors and terrifying characters to endure. Their website warns “All the scare mazes and attractions involve live scare actors, many of whom are considered to be the best scare actors in the UK!”
Enter the Condemned Carnival and explore the Hammer House of Horror themed maze. Then ride the theme park rides after dark. If you’re brave enough, book your tickets.
For those preferring not to brave the monsters, Dreamland is hosting Get Spooked every day during half term with activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Screamland runs 18th October- 1st November inclusive. Ticket prices vary.
Brave Spooky Walmer Castle
Why not visit English Heritage’s Spooky Walmer Castle and explore the grounds and castle at what has to be the spookiest time of year?!
Come dressed in your Halloween finest and be in with a chance of winning a prize. There are crafts to take part in, and terrifying ghost trails happening around the castle. A real treat for little ones wanting to take part in the fun of Halloween.
Running from Saturday 19th – Sunday 27th October. 10am – 4pm. Tickets are available on the day.
Take in a show: Annie the musical
Step back from the ghouls and treat the family to a show at the theatre. The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury is a great place to see a musical as you will feel close to the action wherever you sit.
The West End production of Annie has just arrived in Canterbury packed with family fun and a much-loved score to tap along to. The Times called the production a “glorious revival” and Birds of a Feather’s Leslie Joseph stars as the tyrannical Miss Hannigan!
Annie runs from Monday 14th October until Saturday 19th October. Tickets are priced from £15.50.
