From the house you can be on the high street in under two minutes, which means the Saturday market, the coffee shops and the delis are all within easy stumbling distance before the day has properly started. The Saturday market is a good place to begin with its local produce, bread, flowers and antique stalls. Deal's high street is lined with independent shops: vintage finds, bookshops, homewares and galleries sit alongside excellent cafés, wine bars and restaurants. For food and drink, Deal has so much on offer. The Rose on the high street is a neighbourhood favourite, with a wonderful seasonal menu that changes regularly. The Blue Pelican is the sister restaurant to The Rose and located on Beach Street, with its Japanese inspired cuisine. There are good pubs and wine bars too - The Ship Inn on Middle Street is a lovely cosy pub, and Le Pinardier is a fabulous new wine bar on the High Street which is particularly nice for sitting outside as the evening sun goes down. The beach is an easy stroll with its long, open shingle shore with the famous pier. Kingsdown, just further along from Deal is brilliant for children: rock pooling, crabbing, long afternoons with nothing more pressing than an ice cream and a swim. Deal and Walmer Castles are remarkable Tudor fortresses built by Henry VIII and well worth an hour with curious children in tow. Sandwich in the other direction is a medieval, quiet and surprisingly charming town and only ten minutes by car. The white cliffs and Dover Castle are twenty minutes. And Canterbury, with its cathedral, independent restaurants and excellent museums, is under forty minutes, a great day out whatever the age of your group. Deal is also brilliantly connected for a car free holiday if you want one. The train station is a short walk from the house, with regular services to Dover, Sandwich and along the coast, and a direct line to London St Pancras for anyone arriving from the city.
