Owner Insights

With Kent being one of the oldest counties in the UK, it’s natural that every home in our portfolio has a story, and who better to tell it than the current custodian? Owner Insights is our space to document our Q&As with the different owners of properties across the entire Keepers Cottages collection. Read on to discover what makes the property – and the area around it – special to them.

Narayan: An elegant seaside escape steps from Deal’s main draws

Small but perfectly formed, Deal is compact enough by town standards that you can cover much of it in a mere hour, but you’d probably miss the magic that comes with spending a leisurely long weekend or an extended visit here. For the owner of Narayan, a Georgian cottage set within Kent’s very first conservation area, that magic was very much the pull behind the purchase, combined with the enchanting architecture and palpable mischief of yesteryear’s smuggling stronghold – Middle Street.

Below, we talk to Narayan’s proprietor about the history of the house, the must-dos of Deal and which spots in the cottage are particularly special.

Why did you choose to buy in Deal?

“I’d been visiting Deal for many years as friends had houses down here; in fact, the first Deal house I ever stayed at is the one directly across from Narayan. A few years back, after many visits, I just started to covet a cottage of my own, and it just had to be Middle Street, which is simply one of the most charming streets in the U.K.”

What inspired the design of Narayan?

“The renovation of the house has been a labour of love and a lot of perseverance. It was really important to keep the character and comfort of a traditional country cottage yet also have an elevated aesthetic with harmonious contemporary and luxe touchpoints. The highest priority for me was to use the highest quality fixtures like the brass kitchen and bathroom accessories and the paint colours; I did so many trips to Farrow & Ball that I could be one of their colour specialists now.”

What does a perfect weekend from Narayan look like for you?

“Deal is the perfect place to simply hang out with friends, and I love bringing those who haven’t yet discovered Deal. Everyone has adored it, and one couple are now buying their own place. We’ll often go for a long walk all the way down the promenade towards Walmer with an inevitable stop at the Hut 55 for coffee and pastries, as it is hard to resist them… on past Walmer Castle, through to Kingsdown Beach. It’s a good couple of hours to get there and back.

The Deal Saturday Market is the major community hub at the weekend, and I always go with any guests – it’s the perfect mix of local produce, food and drink, vintage curios and clothes.

The beach is close so it’s super easy for us to take a picnic there. Happily, it’s a shingle beach so there are absolutely no ‘sand in everything’ issues! In fact, Narayan is in the perfect position on Middle St – one minute from the front door to the Saturday Market and the High Street; and a minute the other way to the beach.”

Do you know anything about the history of Narayan?

“Many of the houses on Middle Street were built in the 18th century, including Narayan, and would have been used as smugglers’ lodgings and all the other things that sailors needed after long journeys at sea!

In the 1950/60s Middle St was potentially scheduled for demolition, but thankfully a local group saved it, and it became the first conservation area in Kent – most of the Middle St houses, including Narayan, are at least Grade II listed.”

What’s your favourite room in the house and why?

“It has to be the sunroom annex at the back of the house with the French Crittall doors into the courtyard. There is so much light in this room that it’s the perfect spot for a morning coffee or an afternoon tea. In the warm weather it’s ideal for a group of you to open the doors and sit between this little sunroom and the courtyard, which is completely private and not overlooked by any of the surrounding houses. I really like the contrast of this extension with its muted-green zinc roof and walls against the listed Georgian house.

When I stay in the house, this sunroom is my reading room, my surfing the internet room, my dozing on the sofa in the late afternoon room, my catch-up with a close friend room – it’s my happy room.”

Is there a hidden gem nearby that you’d love visitors to discover?

“There’s a lot to be said for the food offerings in Deal; it is fast becoming a gastronome’s haven, with the specialities of The Blue Pelican, The Rose, 81 Beach St, UpDown Farmhouse and many more.

But there are a few excellent eateries that fly a little under the radar: The Sicilian is a small local Italian run by a fabulous Italian family, Little Harriet’s of Deal Tea Rooms for cakes and cream teas, The Star of India for a fantastic Indian takeaway and The Hog & Bean for an easy, tasty menu and more scrumptious cakes. There are many great pubs too, but you must venture to The Ship (definitely not far to travel when staying at Narayan!) and The Forester on the seafront. This is what makes Deal so special; it is a small town but has such a variety on offer that appeals to all – there’s something for everyone.”

What are your favourite things to do in Deal (Kent) when you come to stay?

“I’m an avid shopper so the High St beckons me on every visit and I do have my favourites. Will & Yates for interiors is very well curated, and I often end up buying a treat – in fact the wonderful cane sofa in the sunroom was bought from here. There are too many fantastic stores to name, but I will always have a good browse in Dunlin & Diver, Smoke on the Water, Smugglers Records and Quill Antiques, which is full of ‘old school’ pottery and ceramics.

There are a few really great delis, but my main go-to is Arno & Co. for the best coffee and savoury treats, and I’ll go sit on the benches by the churchyard across the road and watch the world go by – it is so calming.

My obsession with views knows no bounds, and I will always walk down the fantastically modernist pier and take in the view back towards the town, which really has to be the best English seaside frontage. And the light over the sea is different every time – I have taken some incredible images of the moonlight over the water.”

What’s a small detail in the house that guests might miss, but means a lot to you?

“The lighting was really important to me, and there is layered lighting in most of the rooms. The bulk of the lights are on dimmer switches with several lighting options in each room – especially good to hang out in the kitchen and set the light to suit, and the bathrooms where you can choose from bright to super soft depending on your mood.

I also used wall panelling in most of the rooms to bring in an additional elegance and cosiness to the house, and the flexibility of the lighting adds even more depth.

But my absolute favourite details were already here when I got the house – a couple of Apotropaic symbols (protection against evil spirits and witches) from when the house was built. If you look carefully at the exposed brick wall in the attic bedroom, you will notice an almost semi-circle built into the brickwork with a faded pyramid shape inside, and there is a small diamond shape marked into the wooden exposed fireplace mantle in the main front bedroom – this would have prevented witches from entering the house via the fireplaces and stealing away any children!”

What made you choose Keepers Cottages?

“From the moment I made the decision to holiday let the house, I had only ever heard the most wonderful praise for Keepers Cottages and my early meetings with Arthur Shipton (Camilla’s son) only reinforced this. The guests consistently rave about the exemplary service received, and I can wholeheartedly agree on this.

It’s the care, love and attention you can only get from a real family business.”
