Where to Eat in Margate

15 October 2026
Holly Price

Margate is perhaps best known as a true icon of the British seaside, with people flocking to its fresh-air shores for recreation and wellbeing since the 18th century. While it has worn many hats in the years since, it is rapidly emerging as a desirable hotspot for all-things art, culture and food. From weekend trippers to the remote-working and the retired enjoying longer sojourns by the sea, Margate is having a tourism revival. And the bakery, cafe and restaurant scene is thriving as a result.

Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite eateries in Margate, from the essential to the indulgent.

Imagine this – you’ve tumbled out of bed and into some clothes, and you’re stepping outside into the sea air in search of coffee and something delicious to eat. You’re spoilt for choice. Browse breakfast spots and bakeries in Margate below…

Madre

22-23 Cecil Square, Old Town

Marking the niche spot where art meets baked goods meets good wine, Madre is a weekday-only shop / deli / art exhibition space that is every bit as interesting (and delicious) as it sounds. Expect superior Italian ingredients, an amazing environment (it’s housed within the Old Post Office) and queues from the moment they open – get there early to secure your goods.

Rise & Bun

12 King Street, Old Town

A specialty bun bakery with a second location in London, Rise & Bun uses layers of croissant dough to create arguably the best buns around. Shop timeless classics such as cinnamon and biscoff before broadening your horizons with flavours like sweet tahini & walnut, chocolate & cherry and even savoury options including feta & spinach. It goes without saying you should get here early.

The Bus Cafe

The Sun Deck, Royal Crescent Promenade

Housed in a vintage 1980s double-decker bus with uninterrupted sea views, The Bus Cafe serves award-winning, locally sourced breakfasts and brunches. It’s a beloved Margate institution, and any weekend trip should involve starting the day here for an elevated (quite literally) take on a classic breakfast dish. The Sun Deck, where you’ll find the bus itself, is home to a whole host of food and drinks vendors, with live music events throughout summer.

The grade II listed pub interior of The George and Heart in Margate

The George & Heart House

44 King Street, Old Town

It’s a bold claim, to profess that somewhere has the best Sunday lunch, but at The George & Heart, a Grade II Listed former coaching inn, we think you might just find it. Nestle in behind original stained glass windows, sip on something good and tuck into a roast with all the trimmings – including mammoth yorkshire puddings.

Bottega Caruso

2-4 Broad Street, Old Town

Bottega Caruso is an authentic, family-run restaurant at the heart of the Old Town, opened by Harry Ryder and his partner Simona Di Dio in 2018. The dishes, ambiance and products are all inspired by Simona’s heritage, and her family home in Foglianise, a village high up in the mountains of Sannio, an hour and a half drive from Napoli. The restaurant has a neighbouring little sister wine bar and deli, Cantina Caruso, which has been supposedly praised by Madonna herself as her “favourite Italian restaurant..”
