Old Chelsea ia a small, seaside cottage. It is very old and characterful, with low ceilings in places and steep stairs. The property is therefore best suited to a couple, and is less suitable for the elderly or young children. It would not be suitable for those with limited mobility.
Old Chelsea is a small, characterful cottage dating back to around the 1700s, and its at its happiest as a hideaway for two. It can sleep four across a king-size bedroom and a bunk room, but with its cosy proportions it is especially lovely for couples looking for a romantic seaside escape.
Old Chelsea dates back to around the 1700s, and it sits among some very historic neighbours on one of Deals most photographed lanes. Wandering down the lane really does feel like stepping back a few centuries. Being pedestrianised, it's wonderfully peaceful, and it's lined with pots and flowering plants that are lovingly cared for by the people who live here. The lane is at its most beautiful in spring and summer, and guests often tell us it's one of their favourite parts of the stay. From the front door, it's just a few steps to historic Middle Street, with the beach and seafront just beyond.
As you would expect from a cottage of this age, there are steep stairs, low ceilings in places and a few steps inside, including down into the sitting room from the front door. It's all part of its charm, but it does mean the cottage is not suitable for those with limited mobility and is less suited to older guests or young children. Taller guests may need to mind their heads on some of the doorways, as with all conservation area properties.
There is no parking at the cottage itself, as Portobello Court is a pedestrianised lane, but you can pull up on Middle Street to unload. The North End of Deal, just beyond Alfred Square, has plenty of free on-street parking, around a 5 to 10 minute walk away. Once you've arrived, you'll hardly need the car, with the beach, pier and High Street all a short stroll from the door. Please do ask the team if you'd like any local tips.
Old Chelsea is set in the heart of Deal, a much-loved seaside town on Kent’s Heritage Coast, known for its relaxed pace and elegant Georgian architecture. The seafront and pebble beach are within easy reach, perfect for morning walks along the promenade or quieter moments by the water as the light changes across the English Channel. Deal’s compact layout makes it easy to explore on foot, with cafés, shops and the shoreline all close at hand.
The town’s award-winning high street is a particular highlight, offering an excellent mix of independent boutiques, antiques shops, artisan bakeries and well-stocked delis. Seafront pubs and seafood restaurants provide relaxed dining throughout the day, while cosy cafés and wine bars are tucked into the streets behind. Deal Pier offers classic seaside views, and nearby Deal Castle and Walmer Castle provide a fascinating insight into the town’s long naval and maritime heritage.
For days further afield, coastal walking and cycling routes lead north towards Sandwich Bay or south to Kingsdown, both offering wide skies and open sea views. Deal railway station provides direct services to London, making Old Chelsea an ideal base for short breaks and longer stays on the Kent coast.
