Tucked away in the heart of Deal’s charming conservation area, The Old Smoke House is a characterful cottage, perfect for couples or small families looking to escape to the Kent coast. This centuries-old cottage is full of quirks and charm, with original features, painted floorboards and cosy corners that make it feel like a home away from home.Downstairs is a living room with a cosy wood burner for chilly evenings, a pretty wallpaper dining area and a small but well-equipped kitchen for relaxed holiday cooking. French doors from the kitchen lead to the sunny and private rose-walled garden, perfect for morning coffee or a glass of wine after a day of exploring. On the first floor is a light and inviting twin bedroom and a family bathroom with a bath and overhead shower. On the second floor is the double bedroom, which has a lovely view over the rooftops and gardens of Middle Street and out to the sea beyond. Your four legged friend is very welcome.The location couldn't be better, just a minute’s walk from Deal’s pebble beach and promenade, where you can stroll along the seafront with old fishing boats or take in the views from the end of the pier. The town itself is full of independent shops, bars and restaurants. Browse the antiques at Mileage, pick up some gifts from Barkend, grab a fresh sourdough loaf from Arno & Co and vegetables from Merchant of Relish and enjoy dinner at The Blue Pelican, Frog & Scot or Victuals.There’s plenty to explore nearby too. Walk south along the coast to Kingsdown, past beach huts and pastel coloured seafront houses and Walmer Castle, a former home of the Queen Mother. Further afield, the mediaeval town of Sandwich offers quiet riverside walks and traditional pubs. Or hop on a train to Canterbury to visit the famous Cathedral.If you are looking for a truly British seaside day out, Broadstairs is just a short drive away with its sandy beaches and ice cream parlours. The trendy town of Margate is also nearby, home to the Turner Contemporary and the retro amusement park Dreamland.

Property Details

Entrance into the sitting room

Upon entering the property you step into the entrance hall leading into the sitting room, housing a wood burner, TV, a large three seater sofa and a comfortable winged-chair.

Dining area

A step down takes you into a light extendable dining room with seating for six and a large window overlooking the pretty garden at the rear.

Kitchen

A new, well equipped, kitchen with an electric oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave and a cream Smeg fridge which has a small icebox. Wooden worktops and baskets give it a cottage-y feel with two dressers housing all the pretty crockery.

From the sitting room there is a door which opens to a winding staircase taking you to the:

Twin bedroom

A good-sized bedroom at the front of the house with two large single beds that can also be zipped together to make another double if required. Built in cupboards house plenty of hanging space.

Bathroom

Step down from the landing into a large bathroom in the eaves at the back of the property with a lovely rolltop bath and a large drench shower over. There is also an airing cupboard housing the washing machine and boiler in this room.

A lovely light double bedroom in the eaves with sea views to one side and views of the street on the other. Again this bedroom has been beautifully decorated and has built in cupboard space for clothes.

There is a very sweet little courtyard garden, with table and chairs for up to 4 guests to sit outside. There is also a side gate so you can access Middle Street directly.

There is no direct parking at the house, but there is free parking very nearby along Sandown Road or College Road. There is also parking along the seafront.

The cottage is very classic of a fisherman's cottage, and so the stairs are very steep. The bathroom and bedrooms are located on the first and second floor, via wooden stairs with a rope handrail attached to the wall.

  • Parking: Two hours free parking in Alfred square, and free on-street parking beyond Alfred Square
  • This property is typical of houses in the conservation area, with steep stairs and low ceilings in places
  • Towels and linen are provided - no beach towels
  • Dogs are welcome for an additional charge of £25 per stay
  • Wi-Fi access throughout the property
  • Central heating throughout and a wood burner in the living room
  • Cot and high chair available on request - please note that cot linen is not provided
  • This property does have steep and winding staircases and therefore would not be recommended for those with toddlers or young children
  • Babies are welcome and a travel cot is available but please be aware that the property does have a lot of steps
  • There is a washing machine in the cupboard in the bathroom upstairs, no laundry tablets provided
  • A starter pack of sundries such as toilet rolls, washing up liquid and hand soaps are provided to get you started, but you may wish to bring more for your self catering holiday - especially if staying for over a week
  • Please note that this property no longer has a sofa bed option.

The Old Smoke House is a wonderfully quirky, old property full of character, with steep stairs and low ceilings throughout. Please bear this in mind when booking, particularly if travelling with young children or anyone less steady on their feet.

  • We would respectfully ask that the following house rules are adhered to, to avoid any damages to our beautiful home.
  • Please note check out is 10am. Please ensure you vacate on time to allow our housekeepers to enter the property and prepare it for the next guests.
  • Smoking is not permitted in the property at any time.
  • Please note for insurance purposes the number of guests must not exceed the total occupancy of the house.
  • For fire safety reasons please do not use any candles in the property.
  • Please be respectful to neighbours. Quiet hours are between 11pm and 9am.
  • Parties and loud music are not permitted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, there is no direct or private parking at the property, however, there is ample parking options nearby. Please note that you can double park along Middle Street to unload the car on arrival. There is time restricted parking (2 hours) in Alfred Square, and free parking along Sandown Road and College Road. You can also park along the seafront and pay for this using Ringo, and if you keep going past the Rowing Club, the parking becomes free.

Yes, the high street is very close by and you can walk there within a couple of minutes. The quickest way to get to the High Street, is to walk down Alfred Square and take a left at the end.

No, but there is a cafetiere at the cottage so do bring ground coffee. There is great coffee along Deal High Street, and our top recommendations would include Hope and Lane, Climpson and Sons and The Pop Up Cafe.

Middle Street is the heart of Deal's Conservation area and runs parallel with the seafront. This property is just a minutes walk from the beach and you even have sea views from the second floor bedroom. The Old Smoke House is also very conveniently located for access to the town with two very popular pubs within a minutes walk in either direction from the front door and the main town centre five minutes walk away.
