Bell House

  • Sleeps 8
  • 4 Bedrooms
  • 2 Bathrooms
  • No Dogs
Set beside the village green in the picture perfect Kentish village of Wickhambreaux, Bell House is a wonderfully characterful 16th century home, made for relaxing weekends and countryside escapes with family and friends. Sleeping eight across four bedrooms, this much loved house has been in the same family for more than 350 years and is full of the quirks and character that come with its remarkable history. Beams, wooden floors and a magnificent inglenook fireplace sit alongside comfortable furnishings and everything needed for a self catering stay. In autumn and winter, gather around the wood burner after a long country walk; in summer, throw open the doors and make the most of the beautiful large garden, which has a lovely river (safely fenced off) at the bottom. At the heart of the house is the generous kitchen and dining room, with a large table seating eight, perfect for long breakfasts or evenings spent together. The comfortable sitting room provides plenty of space to relax, while the four bedrooms are arranged across two floors, including a twin bedroom and bathroom on the ground floor. Outside, Bell House really comes into its own. A large patio provides plenty of room for alfresco lunches and summer barbecues, while the long lawn stretches away beneath mature trees towards the Little Stour at the bottom of the garden. There's space for children to play, grown ups to linger over lunch and everyone to enjoy the slower pace of village life. And the setting is rather special. Bell House overlooks Wickhambreaux's pretty village green, with the welcoming Rose Inn just moments away and beautiful countryside walks beginning from the village. Wander through the surrounding lanes and footpaths towards Ickham, Littlebourne and Wingham, stopping for lunch at one of the area's excellent country pubs along the way. For days out, Canterbury is around 15 minutes away, while the Kent coast is easily reached for trips to Whitstable, Sandwich and Deal. Whether you're planning a family get-together, a weekend away with friends or simply looking for somewhere peaceful from which to explore both coast and countryside, Bell House is a wonderfully atmospheric place to gather and spend time together.

There is a lovely local pub in Wickhambreaux, along with a very sweet tea rooms and of course fantastic countryside walks. Canterbury is a 12 to 14 minute drive away and is full of things to do including The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury Cathedral, multiple cinemas and plenty of fantastic places to eat and drink (our favourite spots include Franc, The Goods Shed, Fringe & Ginge, and Cafe Des Aims). Other towns such as Sandwich, Deal and Whitstable are all within easy reach, taking no longer than 25 minutes in the car.

No, The Rose Inn is a family run pub which was built in the 1300s and closes each day at 8.30pm each evening, so there is no noise in the evenings. The pub welcomes everyone from children to dogs, and is perfect for a quick bite to eat or Sunday lunches that last all day long.

Yes, a starter pack of logs, firelighters and kindling is provided between the end of September and the end of March. You can buy further supplies at local farm shops or most petrol stations.

Yes, absolutely! There is a little stream that runs at the very bottom of the garden, but this can be fenced off for very small children, if needed. Reviews

Wickhambreaux

Bell House is set in the heart of Wickhambreaux, one of Kent’s most picturesque villages, surrounded by rolling countryside and gently winding lanes. With its village green, historic church and traditional pub, Wickhambreaux feels wonderfully timeless and offers a peaceful base for a rural escape. The surrounding landscape is ideal for walking, with footpaths leading through farmland, woodland and along the nearby Little Stour river.

The village itself is home to a much-loved pub and tearoom, while neighbouring villages offer farm shops, local butchers and cosy country pubs. Just a short drive away, the historic city of Canterbury provides a striking contrast, with its famous cathedral, cobbled streets, independent shops and lively café culture. The mediaeval Cinque Port town of Sandwich is also close by, perfect for a day of wandering narrow streets, riverside walks and relaxed dining.

For exploring further afield, the Kent coast is easily reached, with the beaches of Deal, Sandwich Bay and Whitstable all within comfortable driving distance. Canterbury West station offers high-speed rail services to London (in under an hour), making Bell House an ideal choice for both restorative countryside breaks and longer stays exploring Kent’s coast and countryside.
