Local Spotlights in Deal

The Keepers guide to the very best local businesses

Local Spotlights is where we interview the artisans, creatives, cooks and craftspeople that make the different corners of Kent so special. It is a series on social media that celebrates small businesses and puts them under a much-deserved spotlight. This is our written version, perhaps for you to use as a guide during your stay with us. First up, our founder Camilla has been out and about in our hometown of Deal.

Bygga Bo | Swedish sweet treats & beautiful bakes

Deal Saturday Market & Wholesale

Malin at Bygga Bo makes Swedish buns in line with Fika culture, encouraging them to be enjoyed as part of slowing down and taking – in her words – “a proper break.”

“What makes ours special, is that they are made from my family’s recipe, which I brought with me when I moved to England 20 years ago.” A traditional Swedish bun is made using sweet dough with cinnamon and cardamom sugar paste, looped into a circular knot – Malin’s recipe is not only delicious but also vegan.

Want to try the bunds for yourself? The best place to do so is at Deal Saturday Market, which takes place each Saturday in the Union Road Car Park at the north end of the High Street. Bygga Bo is there from 9 – 12. Elsewhere, the buns are also stocked in Deal Pier Kitchen, Climpson & Sons and The Zetland Arms.

Barkened | A shop for people, dogs & homes

132 High Street, Deal

Emma is the force behind Barkened, a beloved shop on the high street that stocks wonderful pieces for homes, people and dogs. “Everything we stock is very carefully selected – all of our products have a story behind them, such as the people that make them, why they make them, how they make them, where they come from – it’s the stories that I am particularly interested in.”

If you’re visiting Deal, Emma suggests walking the entire High Street, from Alfred Square right the way up to Deal Castle, as that way you’ll get to see all of the fantastic independent shops, galleries and places to eat and drink.

Popup Cafe | A friendly lunch & brunch spot

16 – 18 High Street, Deal

Led by Ben, Popup Cafe is a welcoming hub of the community with a brunch and lunch offering centred around sourdough. Meat isn’t on the menu, allowing the environmentally-conscious dishes to put fresh, seasonal fare front and centre.  “We make nearly everything we serve from scratch, using quality ingredients. We bake ur own bread, ferment our own kimchi and making the croissants. We think you can taste the craft that goes into that.”

If you had a limited time in Deal – say a mere afternoon – Ben would suggest heading to Smuggler’s records (a record shop-come-bar) for a beer, a walk down the pier to view the town from a different perspective before seeking out some live music at The Lighthouse and, of course, a dip in the sea.

Pelican Rooms | A secret, stylish spot for wellness & massage

83 Beach Street, Deal

Occupying the elegant attic rooms of a storied Georgian townhouse, the Pelican Rooms is a wellness centre for locals and visitors alike, with soothing, seascape-inspired interiors bedecked in Liberty London prints and put together by local studio, Brickhouse Interiors. Kate, who runs this intimate wellbeing establishment, is one of six therapists.

“Between us, we have a wide range of qualifications and so we are able to offer our clients a wide range of services, ranging from deep tissue and sports massage therapy to more aesthetic treatments like micro-dermabrasion and micro-needling.”

Her favourite things about Deal? How small but perfectly formed it is, the Brutalist pier, the mix of interesting independent businesses and the constant, steady stream of visitors discovering it for the first time.

Deal Hoy | A proper pub with local flavour

16 Duke Street, Deal

Andrew is the current custodian of the Deal Hoy and the owner of Scout Pizza. In his words, “we’re a proper neighbourhood pub that happens to serve great pizza.”

“We’re all about creating a real sense of place. We try to offer food and drink that you simply won’t find elsewhere by championing local producers and makers who care about craft, quality and sustainability. For instance, our beer is brewed just up the road in Faversham, our pizzas are made by hand using flour from 12 miles away and grown sustainably at Nonington Farms, whilst our pork pies are made by Tim Wilson of Wilson’s Provisions just 10 miles away.”

Andrew’s perfect afternoon starts at the Deal Saturday Market, browsing the wonderful artisan food, stocking up on more of the same (but Italian this time) from the Deal Deli – his warning is clear – do not leave without a cannoli.

Mileage | Curated finds in a converted motorcycle garage

156 High Street, Deal

If you’ve ever lusted over the interiors of our Deal holiday cottages – or indeed, Deal properties discovered elsewhere – chances are that many of the interior pieces were sourced at Mileage. Run by Davina, Mileage is an independent Deal business established by four local residents in 2010 who took over the Old Forge – Martin Wharton, Kristine Hosdon, Helen O’Brien and Davina herself.

“It was very exciting to take over an old motorcycle garage and transform it into a warm, welcoming retail space.  “I’m not attracted to pieces of a particular furniture period – what I’m looking for is craftsmanship – pieces that have been carefully constructed and thoughtfully produced. This always shines out.”

If you’re here for the weekend – Davina insists the one thing you simply cannot miss is the walk to Kingsdown or Sandwich Bay. This is best finished with a drink at one of the many local pubs, where, in Davina’s words, “everyone is so friendly that it won’t take long to strike up a conversation with a Deal resident.”
