Owner Insights

With Kent being one of the oldest counties in the UK, it’s natural that every home in our portfolio has a story, and who better to tell it than the current custodian? Owner Insights is a series of intimate, informal Q&As with the different owners of properties across the entire Keepers Cottages collection. Read on to discover what makes the property – and the area around it – special to them.

Meet Noggin: A Tasteful Deal Townhouse

Noggin is an elegant and inviting affair. Tucked away on Deal’s quiet Silver Street, its pale blue facade and pink door are a suggestive hint at the captivating colours contained within. The sea calls from just steps away, lapping at the pebbly shoreline and providing this tasteful townhouse with the same soundtrack as when it was built back in the Georgian era. For owners Fiona and Simon, along with their two terriers, Dottie & Gigi, it is a homely haven that harks back to joyous childhood memories.

Why did you choose to buy in Deal?

“My grandmother lived just outside of Deal, and so I have very many happy childhood memories of visiting Deal with her, especially the Deal Beach Parlour!

When my husband and I visited Deal about 15 years ago, it felt as though I had come back home. So it was this sense of returning home which made it an easy decision to purchase our first cottage in Deal.”

What inspired the design of Noggin?

“I love colour and pattern, and so the decor in Noggin reflects this. I also had some help from my friend Vanessa Morgan, who is a brilliant interior designer.”

What’s your favourite room in the house and why?

“My favourite room in the house is the sitting room, as it has a sense of calmness and it’s very cosy with the log burning stove alight in the winter.”

What does a perfect weekend at Noggin look like for you?

“A perfect weekend for me at Noggin would be a mixture of walking with my two terriers Dottie and Gigi, visiting all the fabulous local independent shops and of course enjoying a meal in one of the many fantastic places to eat, all within easy walking distance of Noggin.”

What are your favourite things to do in Deal when you come to stay?

“My favourite things to do in Deal are walking along the beach with the dogs first thing in the morning, enjoying the sea air, and then a bit later, after breakfast, paying a visit to the Deal Saturday market, which has so many lovely things, especially the wonderful flower stall. I always pop into Mileage, Mrs Lang, Maxteds and Urban Chic and sipping one of the delicious cocktails in The Rose is a must on a Saturday evening. A relaxing treatment at The Pelican Rooms with Kate on the Sunday is the perfect way to end my weekend in Deal.”

Is there a hidden gem nearby that you’d love visitors to discover?

“If you haven’t paid a visit to Updown Farmhouse just outside Deal then you really must. It’s a culinary experience not to be missed! The food and the unique setting are truly special.”

What made you choose Keepers Cottages?

“In two words? Camilla Shipton. (The founder of Keepers Cottages) I put my faith in Camilla and her team to look after Noggin and our guests. Needless to say, I have never been disappointed – professionalism, effective, friendly communication and high standards of service all spring to mind.”
