What to see, do and enjoy with your other half in Kent

We may be biased, but we strongly believe that Kent might just be one of the most romantic places in the UK. Think medieval towns with quaint cobbled streets, age-old castle ruins beside pretty lakes and a coastline littered with charming harbours and scenic walks – it’s the perfect choice of destination if you’re thinking about treating your better half to some time away. There are lots of things to do in Kent for couples, from drinking in the glorious views of the Kent Downs to quite literally drinking glorious grapes at one of the area’s esteemed vineyards.

Enjoy Date Night at an Independent Cinema

There are lots of amazing independent cinemas across Kent, where you can step back in time for an unrivalled movie night. The following cinemas would be the perfect date venue for your favourite cinephile:

The Carlton Cinema, Westgate-on-Sea – Housed within a striking Swiss-Gothic, Edwardian-era building dating back to 1910.

Kavanagh Cinema, Herne Bay – One of the more modern venues in this lineup, as it opened in 1995, but it does have a nostalgic 90s feel to it.

Palace Cinema, Broadstairs – This building has a history that spans back to the mid-19th century and was opened as ‘York Gate Cinema’ in 1965. It has since evolved into the Palace, complete with Digital Dolby surround sound and high-quality projection.

The Empire Cinema, Sandwich – A stunning Art Deco cinema that opened in 1937.

The Royal Cinema, Faversham – An impressive mock-Tudor building opened in 1937, the Royal feels as though you’re stepping into a tavern or regal court.

Silver Screen, Folkestone – Housed within the upper levels of Folkestone town hall (where film screenings took place as early as 1896,) Silver Screen opened in 1990 and has been a beloved, iconic institution ever since.

Wine Tours & Tastings at Local Vineyards

Great news – you don’t have to go as far as France to enjoy delicious wine tastings and sun-soaked tours of rolling vineyards. Kent, or as we like to call it, The Wine Garden of England, is home to a wealth of esteemed vineyards that have opened their doors to the public.

Thanks to its dry climate and chalky soils, this area of the UK has many parallels to the ‘terroir’ of the Champagne region of France. It’s little wonder then, that local winemakers Chapel Down and Gusbourne have both won awards for their Kits Coty and Blanc de Blanc ranges.

Scenic Walks with Perfect Picnic Spots

Whether you love the coast, the countryside or the woodlands, Kent has an endless amount of walks on offer that exude romance. There are, quite literally, too many to mention, but some of our favourites include:

  • Bedgebury National Pinetum & Forest
  • The Royal Military Canal, Hythe
  • The Lake Walk at Hever Castle & Gardens
  • The rolling deer parkland at Knole
  • The Crab & Winkle Way cycling & walking route from Canterbury to Whitstable
  • Grove Ferry picnic site (which is a good base for the Saxon Shore Way or Stour Valley Walk)
  • The grounds of Scotney Castle

Be Wooed by Kent’s Food Offering

Kent is widely celebrated for its foodie scene, with seafood and fresh produce always on the menu. Wherever you visit, there is guaranteed to be an elegant eatery or two within walking distance, which is perfect if you’re celebrating something special during your stay or just want to sample some of the county’s finest fare. Some of the most romantic places to eat in Kent include:

  • Sargasso (Margate)
  • Franc (Canterbury)
  • Kebbels (Broadstairs)
  • Conservatory Restaurant, Updown Farmhouse (Deal)
  • Hide and Fox (Hythe)
  • The Sportsman (Seasalter)

Be sure to try some of the area’s celebrated oysters during your stay, which are best washed down with champagne, or even better, English sparkling wine. Whitstable has long been a hotspot of the oyster trade, hosting the Whitstable Rocks Oyster Festival in September. Wheeler’s Oyster Bar and The Whitstable Oyster Company are two great places to get your fix.

If casual fish and chips enjoyed on the harbour wall is more your thing, there are plenty of award-winning fish and chip shops along the coast, most notably V C Jones’ on Harbour Street in Whitstable, Fish Inn Two in Herne Bay and Sandy’s in Folkestone.

Watch the Sunrise Over the Sea

Being on the East Coast, Kent enjoys spectacular sunrise views. Some top spots to enjoy it from include Botany Bay in Broadstairs, anywhere atop the White Cliffs (although South Foreland Lighthouse is a great place to head) and on the sand at Sunny Beach in Folkestone. Many of our beachfront and sea view properties even enjoy views of sunrise from their windows, meaning you won’t even have to get out of bed!

If you’re not a fan of early morning alarms, you can also catch some spectacular sunset views from the coast at Whitstable, best enjoyed outside the Old Neptune with a glass of something good in hand.
